Carrouges area

Carrouges and its neighbouring villages are situated among the thickly forested hills crossed by route GR22. Carrouges itself is a staging post on the Three Forests Way, and keen walkers looking for different hiking paths are spoilt for choice here. Carrouges is also the headquarters of the Normandy - Maine Regional Park and the head office is located here in the former home of the canons of Le Chapitre Castle. Carrouges is also home to the "Maison des Metiers" which organises annual exhibitions in the 15th century collegiate church. This area is very proud of its heritage and its major attractions include Carrouges Castle, the 11th century Saint Margaret of Carrouges Church, the Priory with its Romanesque porch in La Lande-de-Goult, as well as the charming Saint Michel Chapel, surrounded by myth and the 16th century smithy at Champ-de-la-Pierre with its smelting furnace.

Hunting Festival

The traditional Hunting and Fishing Festival attracts thousands of visitors every year to its 24 hectare festival site in the grounds of Carrouges Castle. You will find dogs, horses and even hunting horns and on the Sunday during the festival, a religious mass is held in honour of Saint Hubert. New additions to the Festival include competitions and training sessions for those involved in breeding dogs, hunting, fishing, farriery, animal husbandry, riding and the making of hunting horns.

Carrouges Castle

Carrouges Castle was originally built as a defensive stronghold back in the 14th century but by the 17th century, it was used as a family home and stayed in the hands of the same family right up until 1936. This historic castle retains its homely character and charm, thanks to its fine furniture and the numerous family portraits on the walls. Tel : 02 33 27 20 32
